  • [es-pree de less-ka/-iay] (idiom) A witty remark that occurs to you too late, literally on the way down the stairs. The Oxford Dictionary of Quotations defines esprit de l'escalier as, "An untranslatable phrase, the meaning of which is that one only thinks on one's way downstairs of the smart retort one might have made in the drawing room."

In one speech where McCain was attempting to tamp down some of the rally-fomented hatred of Obama, McCain reportedly answered a woman who accused Obama of being an "Arab" by saying...No, Mam, he's not an Arab. He's a human.
Or maybe McCain said, he's a person.
Either way, McCain's answer was a bad one.
No one I've come across, before Powell's endorsement, set the record straight by declaring, All Arabs are human.
Did anyone find that critical fact promoted before Powell's endorsement?
